Scope: Provision of Control & Instrumentation (C&I) Services for:
– Steam Turbine
– Generator
– LP Bypass System
– Turbine-Generator Auxiliaries (lube oil, seal oil, hydrogen, cooling water, heaters, etc.)
Role: Toyethu Trading and Projects served as the C&I Specialist Contractor, delivering
installation, calibration, loop checks, commissioning, and QA/QC documentation.
Project Challenges
– Complex integration of multiple subsystems into the Distributed Control System (DCS).
– Critical timelines to recommission Unit 4 under Eskom’s generation recovery plan.
– Managing extensive instrumentation and wiring across turbine, generator, LP bypass, and auxiliaries.
– Maintaining strict quality and safety compliance in a live power station environment.
Toyethu’s Approach
– Developed and executed a Master Quality Control Plan (QCP) covering all C&I tasks.
– Performed instrument calibration and verification (RTDs, thermocouples, vibration probes, transmitters).
– Conducted loop checks and functional testing for valves, actuators, protection logics, and interlocks.
– Held daily coordination and safety meetings to align with Eskom, OEMs, and site HSE protocols.
Project Outcomes
– On-time completion of C&I services, enabling the return to service of Medupi Unit 4.
– Verified and commissioned critical control loops across Steam Turbine, Generator, LP Bypass, and Auxiliaries.
– Achieved safe and reliable synchronization of Unit 4 with the national grid.
– Delivered comprehensive QA/QC documentation meeting Eskom’s standards.
